EPA Section 608 Certification
The Federal Clean Air Act, Section 608, requires that persons who service, maintain,
repair or dispose of appliances and equipment that contain regulated refrigerants be
certified in proper refrigerant handing techniques. The EPA has also placed a sales
restriction on refrigerants, limiting the sale of regulated refrigerants to certified
technicians only. Technicians who violate these provisions may be fined, lose their
certification, and may be required to appear in Federal Court.
HVAC 410A Certification
Technicians need to be specially trained in the use of R-410A equipment for safety
because it has some characteristics that R-22 does not. The oil in R-410A is not
hydroscopic so installation techniques are more regimented. A deep vacuum must
be pulled to ensure that all moisture is removed and destructive acid is not formed.
